The government has frozen bank accounts belonging to Mombasa County Governor Ali Hassan Joho as investigations into the source of his modest wealth kicks off. The Governor has termed the action by Uhuru government as witch-hunt.
‘This is intimidations and political witch-hunting’ by senior people in the Jubilee government who want to forcefully gain political mileage in Mombasa,’ Governor Joho commented.
In a letter dated 20th March 2017 circulating on social media, the Kenya Revenue Authority through J.M Kiuvu acting for Commissioner for Investigations and ordered CFC Stanbic bank Limited to preserve money in six accounts (two dollar accounts and four Kenya shillings accounts) at the bank under the Mombasa Governor’s name and to ensure the same was not transferred, withdrawn, disposed off or or otherwise dealt with without the written authority of the commissioner or orders of the High Court.
Political analysts have however noted that the timing of the government’s actions was questionable as politicians are currently in the last stretch of campaigns before their party primaries thus they need funds to facilitate the campaigns. The freeze also came ahead of the NASA planned rally in Tononoka grounds Mombasa County to be hosted by Governor Joho.
