Afro-Jazz and Afro-fusion star Achieng Abura has condemned Kenyans who berated the Congolease rhumba Maestro Koffi Olomide for allegedly assaulting one of his female dancers at JKIA.
Kenyans made noise in social media which led to the arrest of the Congolease mucisian. Here is what Achieng had to say in her Facebook wall.
“We Kenyans are very fast to judge. I am disturbed by the Koffi Olomide story for it speaks to how fast we are to forgive Governors who slap women, Senators who pull guns on women, crowds that beat and undress women but are so fast to judge an artiste responsible for a large team of diva minded people for losing his temper, and so we go all the way to humiliate him and castigate him. I have travelled with bands; nightmare of torrid proportion that sometimes can result in your being victimised cause it is your name on the headline. If he truly hurt his dancer, then a lesson has been learned but Kenyans, cut the pretentious judgemental attitude when women are mistreated by men here everyday!
I worked with Koffi in Senegal in Youssou N’dour’s studio. He was so happy to meet a Kenyan artiste. He told me Kenya made him international and he would always appreciate Kenyans for giving his music an opening to Africa and the rest of the world. Tonight, the same Kenya is trying to shut down his career under heavy judgement. People make mistakes.
To Koffi, I wish you a grand show tomorrow in Kenya! Enjoyed your last show here. Performance is very serious business for you, something I learned from you. Blessings!
Achien’g Abura”
