Of Sycophants – Polished but Throwing Stones and Lacking in Discernment.
I will give it to the man.
Mr. Raphael Tuju, Jubilee’s Secretary-General is polished and has the intellect and gift of gab to stitch together a Louis Vuitton Vaneau from a pig’s ears – oratorically of course.
I particularly loved the man’s spin that the “one Al Ghurair” employee who met with Uhuru Kenyatta in State House was “involved in the cement and oil industry…..and not the same Al Ghurair involved in the printing…..”
Folks in professional parlance, Mr. Tuju is giving his meat-eating boss “plausible deniability”. In plain English, the SecGen is covering his boss’ tail. Very smooth Ralph and I am sure Dennis Itumbi and Manoah Esipisu and other members of Jubilee’s spin room are taking notes – lots of notes!
Mr. Tuju’s delivery was a polished and smooth tour de force – in front of cameras and recorders – that reminded me of his predecessor’s (Robert Ouko – RIP) smooth, suave and calm delivery as he held court with the Washington DC press back in 1990; a DC press corps that could not make heads or tails of Mr. Moi’s blathering incoherence.
Professionally and oratorically, Wuod Rarieda is right up there with Kenya’s best and brightest – as he should given his other stint as Minister for Information and Communications.
However, having book smarts and an ability to discern and use said book smarts for sound judgement i.e. spiritual aurality of current events do not always go hand-in-hand.
I am going to conflate here so stay with me:
How, does one explain the man’s inability to keep what happens behind his bedroom door locked behind said doors? I know it takes two to tango and the wife is just as much to blame as is the man but I am from the school of thought that holds true to the adage that the man is the head of the household in ALL aspect of the relationship – I mean aaalllll aspects of the relationship – if you know what I mean!
How does the same man allow what should be a personal private matter with their estranged significant other become fodder for local tabloids and folks like me who pick apart, oftentimes critically and unfairly, socio-political events of the day?
Now this next one is an opinion I have had to wrap my head around thanks to my significant other but how does a man, supposedly of means, heft and gravitas allow a spat with the mother of his children spiral out of control into the public square – in an era of social media no less?
And on a serious note, how does this man of polish (or is it ‘polis’) allow his name to be linked to the death of his estranged wife’s former lover?
Finally, and having allowed the foregoing to happen, how does that same man then question the maturity of anyone – let alone an elder within their own community – while simultaneously doing the bidding of a violent, loutish and philandering duo with a penchant for eating meat?
If ever there was a vivid illustration of the adage “Show me you friends and I will show you your true character”, Raphael Tuju’s dalliance with the former crimes-against-humanity suspects is Exhibit A.
It is also homage to the other adage; that in politics, there are no permanent enemies, just permanent interests and in Jubilee, Ralph Tuju have a mutually parasitic relationship that sadly belies the latter’s aforementioned smarts and savoir faire.
Lastly, people in rubber houses should not throw stones – the stones oftentimes bounce back – with vengeance!
