H.E RAILA AND IDA ODINGA’S CONDOLENCE TO WINNIE MANDELA:
Winnie Madikizela Mandela who passed on a short while ago today led a bitter and dedicated struggle against the brutal Apartheid regime in South Africa, holding fort when her then husband Nelson Mandela was in detention. In the process, she became the physical symbol and centre of the struggle for freedom in South Africa while the husband remained the spiritual centre of the anti-Apartheid movement.
In the course of the courageous struggle, Winnie became an inspiration to millions across the world who were fighting for freedom and dignity of their people. She particularly inspired women to move to the frontlines of struggles for justice and freedom across the world.
Mama Ida and I have received the news of her passing with personal sense of loss. She was, and remained an inspiration and a hero and a close friend to our family. We admired and retain fond memories of her courageous defiance. We take comfort in the knowledge that her place in the history of liberation of the down-trodden across the world is secure.
Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this difficult time.
