PRESS STATEMENT
LOW VOTER REGISTRATION
The Mass Voter Registration (MVR) entered the third week this week with reported low voter registration in various parts of the country.
Whereas we acknowledge the various challenges Kenyans are facing with regard to the ongoing exercise ranging from drought and massive irregularities being reported from our strongholds perpetuated by the state and its agents, the ODM party believes there is enough room to improve on the figures.
Every adult Kenyan has the responsibility to register as a voter in order to elect the kind of leaders they want to govern and or represent them. The low voter registration that has been reported in most parts of the country is not good. It confirms what Kenyans are known for, ‘last minute rush’. This trend needs to end.
The many complaints of double registration by state agents, mass voter importation in Nairobi and the deliberate deletion of names from the voter register is killing the morale of Kenyans. The IEBC has refused to investigate these claims and instead resorted to issuing rebuttals whenever the issues are raised.
Voting is the most precious right of every citizen, and we have a moral obligation to ensure the integrity of our voting process. The IEBC must rise to the occasion and ensure a credible, free and transparent general election.
In the meantime, the ODM urges Kenyans with Identity Cards and Passports to continue registering in large numbers to get the opportunity to participate in the August 8 general election. Your Vote will guarantee you of good leadership.
Nobody will ever deprive the Kenyan people of the right to vote except the Kenyan people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting. Please, get out and get your VOTE now, don’t wait for tomorrow.
Thank you and God Bless Kenya.
