MUMIAS LIFELINE OR MUMIAS JOKE?
By P W
With a domestic cost of production estimated at $900 per metric ton of refined sugar at Mumias, compared with as little as $300 per ton in countries such as Malawi and Sudan, PLUS debt that is topping Shs. 6billion; you expect that people like UDF’s Hon Benjamin Njomo Washiali – Mp. Mumias East Constituency – to be a little smarter on the subject of reviving the ailing giant.
Did Hon Washiali bother to ask Uhuruto why billions of government debts that are earning interest cannot be written off like they were for coffee farmers in Nyeri by Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta?
Did Hon Washiali demand for an end to sugar smuggling from Somalia, now being packaged at warehouses in Industrial Area using local sugar packaging paper, complete with Kebs certification?
Did Hon Washiali demand for a complete renegotiation of the power purchase agreement between Mumias and KPLC, where Mumias is not only producing and supplying power to KPLC, but are now, because of debt, paying money to KPLC; money that should otherwise go into paying farmers and procurement of maintenance spare parts?
It’s just amazing how we Luhya’s sometimes bury our heads in the sand. We should be supporting increased devolution to the counties instead of sucking up to a regime that is governing by PR and has earmarked the Luhya votes to rescue itself from definite defeat in 2017.
