DONALD TRUMP, THE IMPROBABLE NOMINEE AND THE TOUGH ROAD AHEAD
Congratulations to the real estate magnate for emerging victorious in a record GOP field that sported the who-is-who in the conservative political spectrum.
He did it. And with that, the main event has just begun. The Donald now enters a field that has boasted top shelf politicos in the most exclusive club – he will be the GOP nominee!
The general election electorate is a different animal. What worked in the primaries is nowhere near what works in the general election.
For starters, Trump has inherited a party that is so irreparably divided that the left hand does not care what the right hand is doing. In fact, most GOP consulting class have already started to endorse Hillary Clinton for President!
Trump’s route to the nomination involved record levels of political cannibalism that left many competitors baying for his blood. Conservative sweethearts like Governor Jeb Bush, Governor Scott Walker, Senator Marco Rubio et al would rather drop dead than endorse The Donald! There is already talk of Republicans for Hillary movement being shelled out.
The blue collar voters went with the outsider ( Trump) but the mainstream GOP rank and file chose the other guys. It worked for Trump but now what gave the establishment sleepless nights will become a reality now that the Donald will carry the torch of a party that was once considered THE PARTY.
Expect the Democratic machine to uncork attack ads aimed at going where Jeb Bush and company were scared to go. The Democrats will emphasize Trump’s unpopularity with women, latinos and blacks. And to drive that home, they will look no further than Trump’s own words- which are on video- by the way!
In Trump, the Democrats have a candidate in the mode of former Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, who had the same demeanor as Trump and would carelessly wax about going to war. That demeanor and comportment gave the then President Lyndon Johnson an easy path to reelection. All he had to do was run the famous ‘Daisy ad,’ a TV ad in which a young innocent girl is seen playing with Rose petals while on the background, a trigger happy voice counts down to one as a nuclear weapon goes off and annihilates the girl and every living thing! The ad aired in 1964 and painted Barry Goldwater as a trigger happy leader who couldn’t be trusted with the nuclear codes.
President Johnson won in a landslide.
Joel Benenson, Hillary’s chief Strategist will package Trump the exact same way. The term temperament will be the new political buzzword that will inundate Americans for the next couple of months. All Hillary ads will conclude with the phrase: the right judgement and temperament to lead America.
This is the reason why most Republican political consultants are not thrilled tonight. They can foresee a political bloodbath. Trump won the nomination by insulting his way through a crowded testosterone-dominated field, but that script is dead on arrival in a battle against a woman. Make that a seasoned woman who has been in the situation room with the President of the United States during tough national security quagmires. Tough luck Sir.
