Tanzania’s newly elected President John Pombe Magufuli has sacked almost the entire top brass at the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA).

President Magufuli sacked the authority’s director general Awadhi Massawe and its board chairman Prof Joseph Msambichaka.

Permanent Secretary for Transportation Dr Shaban Mwinjaka, under whose docket TPA belongs, was also shown the door as the President sustained the pressure on corruption and lack of accountability in the public sector.

In Kenya, President Uhuru Kenyatta, whose administration is struggling to tame runaway corruption within its ranks, prepares to travel to Rwanda later this week amid disquiet over his frequent trips abroad.

ROUND TRIP

President Kenyatta returned last week from a trip abroad that included a summit in South Africa, a climate conference in France and a Commonwealth meeting in Malta.

Saturday Nation reported that the President had made 43 trips in his three years in power, 10 more than his predecessor, retired President Mwai Kibaki, made in his 10 years in power.

The President jet-setting ways come at a time when the opposition has been piling pressure on him to take charge and probe the whereabouts of Sh140 billion from the Eurobond which they claim is “missing.”

WAIGURU SUSPECT

The President’s former Devolution Secretary Anne Waiguru has also just been named as a suspect by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in various investigations on the loss of Sh791 million in the National Youth Service scandal.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga over the weekend asked President Kenyatta to borrow a leaf from Tanzanian President John Magufuli, who had shown that corruption and wastage can be dealt with if the presidency is committed to fighting the vice.
