Gun Used in Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were’s Murder Found

Date:

Detectives investigating the murder of Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were have recovered a pistol believed to be linked to the crime, marking a major development in the ongoing probe. The weapon and other items recovered were reportedly found inside a house in Chokaa, Embakasi East, Nairobi County.

Also recovered were a bag and a pair of shoes believed to have been used by the prime suspect during the commission of the crime.

According to an official police statement issued on May 6, 2025, ballistic experts have begun forensic tests to establish whether the firearm matches the bullets that fatally wounded the legislator. While investigators have confirmed the recovery of the weapon, they have cautioned that the results of the ballistic analysis are still pending and will be crucial in tying the gun directly to the killing.

Ong’ondo Were was shot dead on April 30 by an unknown individual who was on a motorbike. The MP had been serving his second term and was known for advocating for infrastructure development and education in his constituency.

So far, four suspects have been arrested, including a man alleged to have supplied the firearm. Police sources indicate that the recovery of the pistol has opened new leads.

The four suspects were on Monday arraigned at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) court, but no formal charges were read against them.

Magistrate Irene Gichobi while issuing directives over the case, ordered the suspects to be detained for the next 30 days to pave the way for further investigations.

DCI boss Mohamed Amin, in a press briefing, stated, “The recovery of the firearm is a significant step, but our investigations are far from over. We are following credible leads to apprehend all those involved, including the masterminds behind this heinous act.”

Local leaders and human rights organizations have called for transparency in the investigation to avoid political manipulation and ensure justice is served. The family of Ong’ondo Were has welcomed the recovery of the weapon but urged the authorities to move swiftly and decisively against all suspects.

As detectives continue to piece together evidence, Kenyans remain anxious for a resolution to a case that has exposed deep concerns over political violence and insecurity in the country.
