Powerful Uhuru regime matron and Devolution CS Anne Waiguru may have been a high-flying public figure but the recent corruption allegations levelled against her seem to remain etched in the memories of many citizens.
A new opinion poll by Ipsos Synovate rank her as the third most corrupt Jubilee official after suspended Lands cabinet secretary Charity Ngilu and Deputy President William Samoei Ruto. The ranking is based on citizens’ perception of her after the NYS scandal.
This is such a massive public indictment of Waiguru who has cultivated the aura of infallibility around her, powered by an all-powerful presidency.
Waiguru’s world came tumbling when an IFMIS fiasco in her ministry exposed an attempt (or did it actually happen) to loot the public of Ksh 800 million.
Waiguru’s minsitry employed several PR agencies to manage her reputation as well as distract the public from focusing on NYS scandal. There was even a demo in Kibera, where a non-existent clinic and toilet was burnt down, and thousands of youth and women thronged Harambee Avenue, Nairobi, cleansing her of any wrongdoing.
She spiritedly denied any wrong doing, even apportioned herself the role of a whistle-blower, but the public appear to be convinced she’s tainted.
Powerful she is; but now, with the new Ipsos poll, her reputation, on the question of propriety, seems less powerful.
