In the 2017 political arithmetic, the jubilee government is now convinced Kalenjins may not vote for it again as a single bloc.
Those likely to protest will however be ‘replaced’ by a new rigging bloc -diaspora voters – which the government has gone ahead to claim stand at three million.
These are the revelations emerging from the government-led initiative to register diaspora voters, a move which even the IEBC has protested.
Recently, IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba revealed that the commission has never been consulted to map out diaspora voters. This is despite voter registration going on in some places, especially the United States, where Amb. Robinson Githae is said to be personally criss-crossing the country delivering voter’s cards and national IDs to areas densely populated by kikuyus and other Mt. Kenya groupies, with the belief that they’ll vote blindly and tribally, as is usual.
ODM Director of Elections and Suna East MP Junet Mohammed has accused the foreign ministry of illegally registering diaspora voters. Hon. Junet has questioned the functional independence of IEBC which is the only constitutional body mandated to register voters.
“How the National Government came to the conclusion that there are three million Kenyans of voting age in the diaspora remains a mystery to the Opposition. To the best of our knowledge, no such census was ever conducted. It is equally not clear where those Kenyans are, by country, city and region” reads a statement to the media.
He further adds: “It is equally not clear what criteria the government is using to clear those Kenyans abroad and issue them with identity cards and voters cards at a time millions of Kenyans at home cannot access these vital documents.
In all this, we are convinced that the National Government has embarked in a partisan mischief to rig elections in advance for the Jubilee government”.
Junet has however warned against the temptation by the jubilee to think the 2017 elections will be carried out in their own terms, revisiting recent comments by CORD Leader Raila Odinga.
“We call on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mrs Amina Mohammed to immediately desist from performing functions that do not belong to the Ministry and, more importantly, to desist from actions that raise suspicions in advance about the upcoming 2017 elections.Â
The Party leader Hon Raila Odinga has said it before and we wish to repeat. Let Jubilee regime know that while we turned the other cheek in 2013 elections, we shall never do that again in 2017″.
