There is a clip of Deputy President William Samoei Ruto in a function at Pwani University telling members of the Mijikenda community that the problems they (kalenjins) have with kikuyus are more than those the mijikenda have with kikuyus.
The Deputy President does not elaborate these problems. He however goes ahead to use this alleory to tell the Mijikenda that they need to support the newly created Jubilee Party which ‘unites all kenyans’ and leave ODM.
DP Ruto’s host is Kilifi MP Gideon Mung’aro, a mijikenda. Pwani University is in Kilifi County, in Gideon Munga’ro’s Kilifi North Constituency.
Jubilee supporters don’t want to discuss that clip for obvious reasons. Some, however, have asked us about the context of the clip. So let me give you the context.
It is the second day of January, the yea twenty sixteen. DP Ruto is in Kilifi, together with Aden Duale, Gideon Mung’aro, Suleiman Shabhal and other Jubilee leaders. It is a charged rally, hate flows freely and every speaker, in a pointed anti-CORD rhetoric, is waxing lyrical.
While Suleiman Shabhal’s comments have been widely circulated on social media which prompted the DPP to order investigations, what Ruto said, worse then what Shabal said, has remained heavily hidden. It is said soon after the rally, all mainstream media journalists who attended the forum were called and each paid handsomely to delete Ruto comments.
Also deleted are comments by Majorilty leader Aden Duale. In the end, even Shabhal comments were never aired on mainstream media.
Petrified ODM/CORD supporters were insulted and threatened, harangued for over three hours, for being so silly as to support the opposition or even dream of winning the 2017 elections.
“We can do what we did in 2013 and still win the election with URP and TNA. We are warning you early or what kind of calculation do you think you are still making?” – William Ruto.
“I would like to tell you that we shall win the 2017 elections. We shall win the 2017 elections by force. We shall buy it, we shall steal it, whatever it will be” – Suleiman Shabhal.
“You people should stop complaining. You talk about settlers. That they have done this, that they have snatched us this. If you think you have a problem with the kikuyus you should know we Kalenjins have a bigger problem with them” – William Ruto.
After this statement, most Kikuyu politicians chose not to speak. People started to leave one by one.
Now that is the CONTEXT.
– – – – – – – – –
1. What ‘problem’ was the DP talking about?
2. The NCIC should ask for video clips from this rally. If the commission found that the leaders did not speak contemptuously of kikuyus (no hate-speech), or even mijikendas, then let it give that finding.
