The Orange party may never get one of opposition’s most firebrand politicians on its ticket. Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar Sarai has been nominated by Wiper Democratic Movement as the party’s Secretary General, ending speculation that the Mombasa democrat would return to ODM ahead of 2017 elections.
Senator Omar was one of the prominent victims of the bungled ODM primaries in 2013, which made him cross over to Kalonzo’s Wiper as ODM had apparently decided on Sheikh Ramadhan Kajembe without consulting the ‘ground’.
Hassan, a fierce human rights defender and outspoken critic of the jubilee regime, is a politician any party would love to have on board. How ODM short-changed him remains a baffling issue. It appears he is not keen to rejoin the party of Raila Odinga any time soon.
At the two day retreat of the Wiper Party, Hassan was elevated to the powerful SG position with Nyali MP Hon. Awiti Bolo being nominated as the interim treasurer. The party also resolved to field Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka for presidency in the coming elections and mandated him to begin seeking potential running-mates, including ODM supremo Raila Odinga and Ford Kenya’s co-principal Moses Wetangula.
Mombasa Governor and ODM Deputy Party Leader Hon. Ali Hassan Joho congratulated Hassan after hearing the good news.
“I would like to congratulate my brother Senator Hassan Omar for his nomination as the interim Secretary- General and Hon. Awiti Bolo as the interim Treasurer of Wiper Democratic Party. Their nominations is a clear show of confidence on Mombasa Leaders. I have faith they will execute their mandates zealously and dutifully. I wish you all the very best,” said Joho.
