Hon Jirongo was received by Cord leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Moses Wetangula at a brief ceremony at the Serena Hotel, Nairobi.
He will support Raila’s presidential bid, Hon Jirongo is expected to compete with Ikolomani MP Boni Khalwale of UDF in the Kakamega senate race and will be seeking support from 12 constituencies in the county.
Jirongo’s entry into the senate race complicates matters for Boni Khalwale who hopes that the Musalia candidacy may excite the locals and perhaps ride in the wave to the senate. Jirongo is monied and brings to CORD the much needed cash and mobilization skills that the coalition needs to overshadow Musalia’s bid.
Musalia’s candidature has been plagued by claims that he is a state “project” and that he will only serve the interests of his masters and not of the electorate. Musalia’s failure to get endorsement of Uhuru Kenyatta limited his support to his home turf Western Kenya and locals are fast realizing that he may not make much impact beyond Vihiga.
Raila Odinga’s family claims close relations with the late King Nabongo of Wanga Kingdom.
CORD will most likely ride on the prophecy of Elijah Masinde – that presidency will go to the Luyha tribe via the Lake.
