These days, every Kenyan on WhatsApp seemingly has reliable contacts inside the NIS! So we get unsolicited alerts every few hours about Alshabab’s next target, quite often just a list of all big malls in Nairobi. It is really annoying, especially because the grammar is usually too poor, even by NIS’s admittedly low standards!
Anyway, let me first say that in my view, a terrorist attack in Nairobi is highly unlikely between now and the arrival date of Cousin Barry. Nairobi is teeming with advance teams of Secret Service, CIA, FBI, NSA, NCIS, QPR and all those fancy American security abbreviations.
Nairobi will be an American fortress for the next three months. In fact now we need to fear the police more, for there will be incessant msako in the weeks before Barry arrives that will see many innocent Nairobians sleep in cells to make the city more Barry-friendly. So all you with dreadlocks and suspicious looks can begin to move to the villages and return in August.
But even more interesting, these terrorists never seem to do copycat attacks; they blow up an embassy, move to a hotel, then a shopping mall, then a university etc. They don’t “repeat” a similar attack. I therefore think it is in their interest to make us believe they’ll blow up another hotel, or campus, or a big mall….while they are busy planning something totally different! This crossed my mind when I saw TMall under total security lockdown the other day, while big residential blocks right next to TMall stood unguarded!
Where did we get the assumption that these terrorists only want to kill us inside big malls and not invade a residential apartment block Garissa style, for example? If I was an NIS man, I would now be thinking of the types of attacks they have not carried out in Kenya, like residential blocks, sports fuctions, poisoning water distribution plants, blowing up VIPs etc. Because these guys don’t do copycat attacks, yet we heavily guard the type of places they have attacked, leaving their next project mere sitting ducks.
Meanwhile, I don’t buy all that nonsense that circulates from “reliable sources in NIS” about sijui Nakumatt Mega is about to be blown! Some of these could be just business rivalry causing panic.
