Vanity, it is all Vanity. These are the thoughts whenever I see some worshiping politicians. I am not too young, nor too old- but I have lived long to see men and women rise and become extremely powerful- only to disappear and become irrelevant in a few weeks.
I was a frequent visitor to Kabarnet High School in the late 1980s and early 1990s when Baba Moi and Kanu were the Baba na Mama. I tell you, there were men and women that visited Kabarnet Town, and everyone would stand at attention. Nowadays, I see them slither away like shadows.
Then came Biwott, the Total Man. Mentioning his name even in dark bars sent a shiver down people’s spines. Now, Biwott is as forgotten as a dream. In my early days in the newsroom, nobody could dare mention the namegy Gideon Moi. He was only referred as a powerful businessman. Nowadays, I see even some little children in Social Media hurling insults at Gideon and shake my head in disbelief.
Early in Kibaki’s Presidency, Dave Mwangi, Chris Murungaru were very very very powerful figures. Now, they even walk through CBD, and nobody cares. Francis Kimemia was another powerful man at the tail end of Kibaki regime and also Uhuru’s first 18 months in office- we only see him update his Facebook page…
When things went well for me in my business in 2007, I shifted and lived in Kitusuru. Among the guys that lived my neighbourhood were Njeru Ndwiga, then an extremely powerful figure in Cabinet, who remembers him?. Amos Kimunya was a frequent visitor, always coming to see someone that he was not comfortable introducing to the public.
Back then, Amos Kimunya was the “”Msema Yote” Kwa Sirikali. His word was law. Thank God, he stood by Safaricom when they were establishing Mpesa, and powerful banks were resisting. That is how powerful Kimunya was going against the desires of the rich powerful banks, Today, he is just a shadow, emaciated and fighting to remain a free man in a court battle.
I highly suspect that some key Cord Politicians died out of cardiac arrest after finding life out of power unbearable. The list can go on and on.
So, those that are seeing some very powerful figures today, just know that it is all Vanity. I always remember the words of Kamlesh Pattni, when I interviewed him soon after he got saved. He told me “”Kijana, hii maisha usi one mtu ako na mapesa mingi uka fikiria eti ako na furaha. Hii mali ya uma uki iba, maisha yako ita haribika, maisha ita kuwa ngumu, hospitali ita kula pesa yako, mawakili wata kula pesa yako, polisi wata kula pesa yako…. yote ni bure… afadhali mtu aiishi maisha simple… bila kuiba pesa ya umma” Have a thoughtful Friday.
