The name betrays you, which is now famous quote from none else other than our former vice president Kalonzo Musyoka who by any yard stick is perceived to be one of the sober minded leaders we have, non-combative and always weighs his words before uttering them, but on this day he could not resists to say what is a common knowledge.
Agikuyu community is well known for their contribution in Kenya’s struggle for independence, the Mau Mau freedom fighters who went to the bush after the white man took their land suffered a lot, in the hands of the colonialists and their collaborators, their suffering is well documented but in the end when they came out of the bush, their lives never changed, but those who took their children to wazungus’ schools and never went to the bush but collaborated with the colonialists prospered, they took the land left behind by the white settlers, their children got the best jobs, while the Mau Mau families were left to scratch the left overs, a good example is the family of Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi.
But is should be noted that the community has been able to produce three presidents since we attained Independence, they are the largest tribe in Kenya today, spreading all over Kenya from Lamu to Kitale, and they are hardworking people, they will turn a sleepy village into a town center in a short time leaving the locals wondering what just happened.
How did they achieve to take the presidency three times and to top that, a son of the former president who is accused of crimes against humanity was able to ascend to the top seat through the ballot box, the answer is they don’t go against the grain, they always vote in one direction.
The community has never voted in majority for any other person other than their own when it comes to the top seat on the land, that is their signature, it could be their downfall like it happened in 2007 when it was said the elections became 1 against 41 and in 2013 their triumph when they joined forces with their nemesis to take the seat. Their signature has become their best bargaining chip, all other communities knows unless they accept to play second fiddle they will not get the Agikuyu’s votes.
The Gatundu south parliamentary seat brought out the fear in the community of going against the president who is the custodian of the community, Mr. Kamere had to step down, his reasons he did not want to be the cause of division and tension in president’s backyard. It was clear that the people of Gatundu south were not happy with the nomination of Moses Kuria, who is well known for his unintelligent theatrics and hatred towards other communities, and it looked like Kamere was going to win, but the people of Gatundu had no say, the president wish had to be obeyed.
Every time there is a discussion about facts, it is very saddening to see even professionals from the Agikuyu community comes out and try to defend the government and in particular the president even if it is factually wrong, a good example is Paul Ndiritu Ndungu whose land commission was named after tried so hard to see no wrong done by Uhuru Kenyatta in his order to revoke tittle deeds, his own report points to the land problems compounded by political interference, but he could not be in support of pointing out that Uhuru was wrong because he could not go against the grain.
Nothing will ever change on how the Agikuyu community vote nor how they argue for or against issues, no matter how we wish things will be different, the collective responsibilities in the community is unshakable, don’t expect the community to vote for William Ruto after Uhuru’s term is over, because that is not how they operate, don’t expect any professional from the community to reasonable argue facts in a rationale way, because that is not the way they operate, as long as the president comes from the community, there will be no wrong done in any action taken.
