JUBILEE’S RACE TO THE BOTTOM
By Dorcas Sarkozy
Yesterday, we woke up to the news that the Jubilee government’s new army of political spin masters were reporting for duty at Harambee House Annexe. This new development means that Jubilee operatives are literally taking Sir Winston Churchill’s phrase on face value. “History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.” When Sir Churchill made that statement, he was on the verge of working in concert with the US leadership to end world war two. He never meant it the Jubilee way.
Jubilee recruited thirty six bloggers to spin the ‘unspinnable! ‘ They are supposed to make a failing government look good! A government which boasts record failures in education, security, economy, corruption, governance and healthcare. The colossal failures in this government have deprived even the pompous bloviators a chance to chest thump. There is nothing to write home about!
Jubilee promised laptops for school pupils and ended up depriving those very pupils a chance to close the school year in an amicable manner by defying a court order and enabling a strike that crippled learning across the nation! School kids were left to fend for themselves as a defiant government showed the teachers the middle finger.
The upshot was a reluctant teachers fraternity that stood by in silence when examination cheating became rampant and blatant. In other words, the teachers have gone on a go-slow for lack of remuneration. Who can blame them?
The economy is on its knees and the government is broke! The Treasury is admitting that the government is unable to foot its bills. This statement would be understandable if the whole world was going through an economic downturn reminiscent of the 2008 great recession.
Sadly, for Kenya, the cataclysmic fiscal situation is a function of runaway spending, corruption and poor prioritizing! The government bemoans the wage bill but conveniently ignores the billions shelled out to Anglo leasing or the millions ‘lost ‘ at the NYS or the ballooning NYS budget of 25 billion shillings. The government’s ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’ strategy will not work in a globalized economy and the Treasury ought to know better.
Corruption has shot up to stratospheric levels. The Euro bond proceeds, were supposed to be used in the LAPSETT project but the process evaporated before the LAPSETT handlers could get a fraction of it. Due to the economic jargon and macro economic minutiae, most Kenyans didn’t quite grasp the story behind the bond until a political equivalent of the mythological Cassandra by the name of Jacob Juma blew the whistle.
The money is gone and guess what? The tax payer will have to pay for it! That’s the Jubilee government’s modus operandi. Fleece to the umpteenth time and when the wells are dry, heap the bills on the tax payers lap!
In matters Presidential politics, its always important to have someone who has been tested, ready and willing to do the work. The Presidency is not a part-time job! There is a reason why all US Presidents age in record time right after assuming office. Obama went from black hair to grey within months, Clinton and George W Bush left office still in their fifties but all had heart surgeries right after leaving office!
The pressure is high, the expectations are equally high and all decisions that come to your desk are life and death situations. “If they are easy decisions, they never reach the President,” so goes the saying in the White House.
Its now clear that UK was never ready for the Presidency, his own supporters now agree. His casual approach to dire situations is testimony that he was not ready for prime time. The buyers remorse is palpable and to most people, he has outlived his political sell by date. Its time for somebody else.
How else can people , in this day and age, die in the long queues waiting to be treated? How can medical doctors be forced to moonlight elsewhere because of meagre pay ? Everything is going wrong! Not only are we obeying Murphy’s law, the Jubilee government is a complete political clusterfuck! The ultimate bridge to nowhere!
Note to the next leader: please make sure that you know why you are running for President, set your agenda, engage the masses, inspire them, diligently and responsibly execute your mandate for Sir Winston Churchill reminded us that “the price of greatness is responsibility.” Please be responsible Mr Leader, the country is crying for help.
