For those who follow senior JOURNALIST and presumed blogger Gordon Opiyo will agree that the man who may be his mid fourties or ealier fifties hates Raila Odinga…. he infact supports Uhuru with all his heart and soul.
Gordon slowly just like many Jubilee apologists is getting the gist of the state of affairs, corruption in Kenya has hit an all time high… na bado.
Here is his own narration of the dillema he finds himself in>>>
Old Money Vs New Money:
After reading the Sunday Nation, I was shocked to discover that Majority Leader Duale was given contracts worth 400 Million bob by the GDC, at a time when the GDC was being investigated by Parliament. I was appalled by Duale’s stoic rebuttal of the story. A few weeks earlier, I was shocked that vocal ODM MP was listed among the beneficiaries of suspect tenders at NYS, the MP has since gone silent.
Duale’s response brought me memories of an interview I did with the Late John Michuki in 2004. Michuki was one man that spoke straight to the point, and always said some very true, but uncomfortable things.
At that time, several questions were being asked about Kibaki’s commitment to fight Corruption. Michuki told me “Young man… hiyo maswali mingi unauliza hakuna faida.. Look here, many of us have land and property, we want Kenyans to get cheap loans so that they can buy houses that we are building in that land. Many of us have factories, and big agricultural estates… we want the roads to be good, so that we transport our produce to the market and the Airport…
So do you think we can engage in destructive activities that hurt the Economy? Hawa watu wa njaa njaa ndiyo wana leta aibu ndogo ndogo kwa kuiba pesa kidogo kidogo na ma tu-tenders ndogo ndogo”
Michuki’s statement brings out the grand issue facing Kenya right now: The fight between the holders of Old Money (Acquired in the 50s, 60s and 70s) and the new crop of tenderpreneur politicians that started holding real money in the 90s and in the past decade. The massive theft in County Governments will produce another new crop of very wealthy thugs called MCAs, and Governors.
If you follow the Economic Trend carefully, you will realise that Michuki spoke some very hard truths. Most of the key decision makers in Kibaki’s inner circle between 2003 and 2008 were from the Golf Playing Muthaiga Club. Truth be told Kenya witnessed real transformation. Loans became cheap, revenue collection shot up, roads were made etc… yaani everything improved. Why? As Michuki says… rich men were in charge, and were seeing things from the global perspective. They owned land, manufacturing industries, large agricultural estates… and if Kenya goes under… they suffer most.
They had no time for small time useless destructive tenders like sh 400 million to supply food to GDC staff, or give NYS Ndegu and mahindi for 500 million. They channeled such monies to roads and infrastructure.
One of the key reasons I fully and wholeheartedly support Uhuru Kenyatta is that his presidency represents the group Michuki was talking about. It is simply illogical for Uhuru to engage in silly Duale type of contracts. As Michuki asked “Do you think we can engage in destructive activities that hurt the economy?”
Whether from CORD, Jubilee or Amani.. the average politician simply wants to steal. Whether a Luo or Kikuyu Kalenjin or Kamba, the average tribal leader simply wants to plunder.
If Kenyans could simply reason like Michuki, I believe corruption would be reduced. At least for now, when systems and structures to fight corruption are non existent or weak, the only safety net we have is to have multi billionaires like Uhuru in total power. At least, he will want roads to be built so as to ensure that milk reaches the market, At least he will work extra hard to reduce interest rates so that you can afford to buy land and build your own house. As he does that, everyone will benefit.
