I think the government should introduce compulsory sex education in high schools. The benefits far outweigh the demerits. See, you will say this is not our ‘culture’ (as if formal education is) but times are changing.
Students are eating the kind of foods which ‘balloon’ their bodies. They come into contact with more sexual explicit content than my generation of youths.
Teaching them safe sex habits will in the end minimise the kind of break-ins boy schools in some regions are attempting in girl schools.
One day I was waiting for a friend in town -along Moi Avenue around F2000 – and got curious because so many adolescents were getting in the club. Schools were closed for holidays. I followed suite and found out each weekend (Saturday) the club opens for them to come merry.
The things I saw shocked me. Even more shocking was the fact that they were happening between these 15 to 17 year olds. Even ‘shockiest’ to me is that they seemed to be loving it!
I left the club before FIDA caught up with me. Had I stayed, I’m sure some 16 year old would have jumped on my being. If anything, ‘age’ has not caught up with me ‘thaaat muuuch’.
Just so you get me clearly, sex education is not sexual intercourse. I am not advocating for the roll out of a porn syllabus. However, to fail to educate the young girls and boys of adolescent age how to take care of themselves in these lurid times is to expose them to the vicissitudes of now.
Because life is hard and housing expensive, many parents of low income status are sharing tiny holes with the their teen children. In some homes, teen children are technically on their own, living with their ‘so called’ boyfriends.
Health experts have found out there are safer ways adolescents and teens can be taught alternative sexual expressions when emotions and hormones take the better of them.
Across several states in the USA(si we are now strong partners with the USA adolescents and teens are taught these things. The upshot is that they are more prepared to deal with awkward sexual situations than their counterparts here.
Let’s not forget one of the popular shows in a leading TV station here is Tahidi High which has certain episodes bordering on this issue.
A young girl in Kisii cut shot her life when a letter she allegedly wrote to her boyfriend was read publicly. There are thousands of cases of students getting expelled or suspended for merely being seen with those from the opposite sex.
And those letters (missives) we used to write…what were they all about?
I am not a moralist. I see this evil world as it is and try to suggest solutions.
Let’s try with debates such as ‘masturbation is better than abortion’. Let’s know what our young people think.
Let’s enter this new world bravely and with no apologies.
