Why Chelsea Clinton should lay a wreath on Chepkurgor’s grave
By Thomas Chemelil
In 2000, a young Kenyan man stunned the world with his wild proposition to the daughter of the then US President, Chelsea Clinton.
His offer for Chelsea’s hand was a hefty dowry of 20 cows and 40 goats! This offer was then generous by any African standards.
In a town hall meeting, Hillary Clinton jokingly promised to pass the marriage offer message to her daughter.
Godwin Kipkemoi Chepkurgor did not leave to fulfil his dream. One, Chelsea married another man. Two, while filming rogue elephants which were destroying farms in Baringo on 1st August,2014, a rogue elephant trampled him to death.
Today, Chelsea Clinton has accompanied her father on his visit to Kenya. It would be a befitting honour if she laid a wreath on the resting place of this daring African man who once described her as “beautiful, disciplined and well-natured woman.”
Godwin Kipkemoi Chepkurgor will forever remind us that love knows no social, racial or economic backgrounds and that it can be used to make the world a better place for all of us.
Rest in peace Godwin.
