Hon. Koigi wa Wamwere: Kenyans Are Not Mature Enough To Handle Referendum Debate Logically

August 18, 2013

BY HON. KOIGI WA WAMWERE

Nothing is more boring than people who speak only what they think their masters, gods and ethnic kings want to hear. When political gods speak, it is to advance their interests, not those of the people.
When will people stop speaking as megaphones for leaders who can speak for themselves and have not asked people to speak for them? When will poor people begin to speak on their own behalf to further their own interests?
When some people oppose referendum, it is only to please Uhuru and when others oppose it, it is only to advance Raila’s interests.
The truth is were Kenyans to think objectively, they would support a comprehensive amendment to the constitution that would make it more effective as a tool of reforming our inhuman capitalism and fighting poverty, corruption, unemployment, dictatorship of majorities and minorities, detention without trial and negative ethnicity that is now turning counties into mere majimbos where a Kikuyu cannot get a job in Siaya or a Luo get one in Nyeri.

Constitution is not a beautiful suit whose blemishes we refuse to see and which we only wear to look smart.
Constitution is a tool with which we protect our freedom and rights and fight our problems. When such a tools gets blunt, we sharpen it, not continue hurting our hand with it.
