Eng. Michael Kamau is being charged for his missteps as a civil servant, not as an ethnic Kikuyu. I am downhearted reading tribal chauvinists from the mountain region spinning this anti-corruption fight as an ‘us’ vs ‘them’ diatribe. This is not the Kenya we want to raise our children in. It is sickening, it hurts.
I never heard any Luo child scream blue murder when former Tourism Board MD, Dr. Ongong’a Achieng’, was charged and sentenced to 4 year imprisonment for fraud at the Kenya Tourism Board. The son to the former freedom fighter calmly took his medicine and marched to the gallows carrying his own cross. Not at any point in time did he attempt to drag ethnic Luos in his sufferings, neither did his co-accused Madam Rebecca Nabutola – a lady I have utmost respect for.
Those who have met Ongong’a Achieng’ will tell you of a very humble man. Before he was frogmarched to the gallows for that corruption charge, he always walked on the streets like any other Kenyan minding his own business – no flashy aluminium saucepans plated with contraband gold round his neck, no cheap-steroid-intoxicated bodyguards wearing mtumba mushainos.
People who have money and don’t ram it down our throats are the future of this country. Ongong’a Achieng’s tribulations silently became my own and I always prayed that he gets out and live his normal life.
Could we let Eng. Michael Kamau carry his own cross in peace without being subjected to unnecessary Kikuyu supremacy war chants?
