I do not understand why President Uhuru Kenyatta is being pilloried over the nomination of Dr. Patrick Ngugi Njoroge to be the next Central Bank Governor.
Let’s first get some basics right, by playing the tribal card.
Of the 22 Kenyans who applied for that position, only 4 were Luos – Bunge Aggrey Otieno representing the great Homa Bay County, Frederick Odhiambo Otieno, carrying the flag of Siaya (the land of scholars), Kisumu County had John Hongo Randa doing duty for us, while the entire Nairobi County had only one applicant in the form, and shape, of Michael Isaac Ombuoro.
Four Luos sticking their necks out for a position many have come to associate with the tribe in power.
I want to tell you that I know many qualified members of the Luo community whom I expected to see their names, but, for reasons only known to them, chose not to bother apply.
The Luhyia Nation fared even worse. There was not a single applicant from Kakamega, Vihiga, and Bungoma Counties combined. Only Busia County decided to send little-known Nancy Oundo Dalla to the arena of financial management heavy-hitters. She, like the four Luos who had made the long walk to Nairobi, did not make it to the shortlisting stage.
Luo Nyanza and Western Province sent only a paltry 5 applicants none of which had a Doctorate Degree to fight it out with a carefully assembled team of 17 backed by the regime and papers to boot. When you send your soldiers on a war mission, you must cherry-pick the ripest of the bunch.
Compare that with what Central Kenya took to the battle-field. Murang’a County, alone, sent the most prolific of game-changers to that pool of applicants, all with at least a doctorate degree – Dr. Patrick Ngugi Njoroge, Dr. Rose Wanjiru Ngugi, Dr. Peninah Wanjira Kariuki, and Prof. Kinandu Muragu.
There was no way the Murang’a team was going to lose out to that list of 5 jokers up there.
Even good-old-forsaken Samburu County, with all the pestilence and clan hatred, looked around from their lean pool of scholars and found a certain Dr. Haron Sirima. It is no-brainer that when the list of 5 shortlisted candidates were out, all of them had a doctorate degree and above.
You know what? We can choose to vomit sludge online accusing Uhuru Kenyatta of being a tribal bigot, but on this one, the tribal critics have got it all wrong. I want to ask my people. That the next time there is a government vacancy and you have the feeling you fit the bill, try send you CV in, regardless of who is in the interviewing panel. We know you are learned, so why not show your papers where they are needed the most? My late grandfather told me that you miss 100% of the shots you didn’t take.
But what do I know?
