At the London Marathon where First Lady Margaret Kenyatta took to the track to raise awareness on maternity deaths in Kenya and construct 47 mobile clinics, among the ‘guests’ at hand to cheer him to the finish line was the flamboyant Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko.
Sonko who rode with the Kenyattas took the moment, on his Facebook page, to share such rarities.
Consistently, this bog has covered Sonko’s politics, most of it disguised as philanthropy. Sonko, from very close sources, is tightly tethered to President Uhuru in a 2017 game-changer which is set to make Nairobi County politics fiercer and uglier than you can imagine. Sonko wants to be governor, or, as he puts it, ‘the poor man’s governor’.
In the 2013 elections, Nairobi 17 constituencies titled towards Jubilee which won more seats in parliament than ODM. At the County Assembly, however, CORD trounced Jubilee with a single seat. CORD also won the governor’s seat, with Dr. Kidero narrowly beating former Embakasi MP Ferdinand Waititu.
Sonko’s claws are set to be seen in the Mathare by election which is set to pit him against Nairobi governor Dr. Evans Kidero.
The Mathare seat, though not the real game, may very well see Sonko directly challenging Dr. Kidero for the first time over ‘ground popularity’.
With dirty tricks, including open vote buying, ballot stuffing or outright fiddling with the numbers at tallying level; Mathare is both Jubilee and ODM’s to lose. The side with the dirtiest of tricks, outside campaigns and party loyalty, will carry the day.
In London, Sonko drove with the Kenyattas, becoming one of the very few Jubilee legislators with access to the first family. It is said ever since being elected as  President, Uhuru granted ‘unlimited access’ to Sonko who can visit statehouse, see or ring him at any time.
“The thing Sonko is that he has his own audience…his own votes….his own popularity. He doesn’t need the president to carry his hands up which means he can win the TNA nominations for Kidero’s seat anytime. Even Kidero isn’t assured of that currently as ODM stands,” says a keen observer of city politics.
Meanwhile, the Nairobi senatore last week ‘adopted’ baby Satrin Osinya, the child who successfully survived a surgery to remove a terrorist bullet lodged in his head.
“I have decided to take in Osinya as my own son. I will take care of the innocent child like my own son, I will try all my best and see this Baby gets the best education and live the life he deserves. Will also assist empowering the father and thanks to Hon. J. Kutuny and many promising him a job Everything happens for a reason, Baby Osinya is a blessing to all of us and one day Baby Osinya will help many people. Like Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, I believe that I met Baby Osinya for a reason and he will one day become a force to reckon with,” posted Sonko .
