Uhuru’s humiliation at The UNSC is the culmination of a government that is in denial. A nation that is delusional that Communist leaning nations, read Russia and China are all that Kenya thought it needs to solve all of its diplomatic and economic problems.
That Jubilee could spend billions of its foreign policy budget to advance a personal cause is ridiculous, obnoxious and disingenuous way of dealing with a legal problem. Its actually an arrogant display of primitivity at the world stage. All this without delivering results.
Here is my free advice, an Uhuruto Presidency, gave them the trappings of power, but it constrained their ability to address the ICC mess. A different occupant at State House would have been more credible in pressing for a Kenyan cause at The UNSC without the appearance of a conflict of interest.
The writing is on the wall, an Uhuru Ruto presidency will be painful.
Then there was The ill-advised speech delivered at Addis. The President in an Osama-Mugabe-Ahmadinejaad tone of narrative spewed anti-west venom and called them racist and imperialist, just a week after they had granted him their own special forces but which The President turned down to not only neuter the terrorists at Westgate, but also go and die. China which didn’t assist, is waiting for the tender to rebuild Westgate.
The President should have applied a Clintonian art of triangulating given the different factions of the UNSC. His hard tackle and rogue speech appeased the East but alienated the West. That’s 3/5 veto wielding nations gone, due to Uhuru’s tongue. That’s not smart strategy Mr. President.
Yes, President Kenyatta’s speech at Addis, gave him 10 minutes of fame, but with it Kenya’s best opportunity for deferral so far was vanquished thanks to shunning a non-aligned approach to international relations. A 7/15 support for a deferral is a sub-par performance, that calls for a shake-up of Jubilee’s foreign policy team.
Of course China offered to help at The UNSC, but they only delivered 7/15 votes. The power balance at the UN was well thought out after WW2, and am sorry to report that its skewed in favour of The West with 3/5 of the veto wielders being US, UK and France.
This is the Superpower, The Commonwealth, The Francophone. That’s a massive force at the UN. China grants predatory lending to countries, but they don’t know diplomacy because defying them has no consequences, which means they are toothless and useless in helping Kenya secure a deferral without bringing the other Veto wielding nations on board.
And given the hard time the West encountered dealing with Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro and Mugabe, The West would endeavour to nip anti-West leaders in the bud at their earliest portrayal of Castro-like tendencies.
Kenyans are now in trouble as the ground is being prepared to gag the media and round up NGOs all under the guise of sovereignty. That made it difficult for Kenya to secure the support of progressive nations. Because recent Jubilee legislative initiatives are geared towards rolling back The democratic gains made thus far.
