BY GEORGE MORARA
When reporting how much food Uhuru took in his lunch box on his senseless travels, the cost is given in US dollars! $80,000 looks rather modest to fairly unscrutinizing eye of a Kenyan! Not to those of us who’ve known hunger and know exactly what just $1 can do to your tummy! On deals with China, the figure is given elaborately in Kenya shillings!
I am a perfect example of how valuable one dollar can be! Or rather 100 shillings, give or take depending what games Uhuru’s bank is upto!
On completion if High School, I got a job working for a mean Asian guy in Kirinyaga Rd, Nairobi. My salary was Kshs.100 – roughly 1 USD!
My budget worked out as follows:
Transport to and from work – 40
Savings 40 (read, girlfriend)!
At the time I lived with my brother so upkeep wasn’t an issue! But I learnt first hand the value of a dollar! What about a man with a family, opting to walk all the way from Kibera to Industrial area to make just that 1 dollar doing back breaking work!!! A 10 shilling lunch must make him feel ever so guilty!!!
Anyway, a typical Nairobi lunch in those days was mainly potato chips fried in expired and overused oil, a soda- and chicken for the able carnivores who also have a sausage or two thrown in. The total for me being vegetarian usually came to 50 ‘Bob’! That’d be half of my day’s wages!
Realising on the 2nd day that life couldn’t continue at that standard, I dicided to follow some guys who seemed to know somewhere to eat cheaply!
It wasn’t too far from the shop! Straight on our Street to the right- on to a sharp turn to the right-down as though to the end of the then likely Accra road just before crossing to Ngara over a filthy river! There beside with plenty of large flies buzzing, were ladies selling a chapati and dengu soup, githeri and mokimo in a small dirty and overly used plastic bowls- all for just 10 shillings!
Of course I was never brought up in the sprawling middle class suburbs of Nairobi but this did take courage to actually go and eat there!
Up until then I led a fairly modest and reasonable existence- now I apprehensively with pangs of hunger and limited resources dictating, tucked in!
The food turned out to be quite delicious actually! I walked back to work expecting my tummy to start running anytime! Nothing happened!
I reckon with prayer, cooking the food thoughly made it safe! Just the hygiene was the issue otherwise the quality was great! My eyes were opened as to how every pocket met its wearer’s daily needs!
Back to my point!
My wages were Kshs. 100 roughly $1!
So when team Uhuru tells us Uhuru spent 80,000 on food and signed deals worthy 435,000,000,000- it does look staggering and for the gullible, there’s a sense of ‘the deals is worthy’! But actually if translated, it will roughly equate to little over what Obama spends on his motor and flycade on a good trip! It is he whose example that Uhuru is starting to emulate!
Since Mathematician George Saitoti has been eliminated, the media particularly the Daily Nation can’t and wont like to translate the 400 billion KENYA Shillings into USD! I guess the information, and blurringly given so we can ‘roughly’ work out and justify Uhuru’s rather disproportionate lunchbox!
The 435 billion may sound huge for but actually the Chinese, find it laughable! They just wholly gifted the African Union with a house worthy about half the 430 ‘billion’- which is like a drop in the ocean!
The deal Uhuru just ‘secured, can only in fact build about two modest sky scrapers and much of the ‘investment’ is likely for ‘strongholds’ ONLY!
Uhuru’s personal stash also is miles ahead of this figure- is just a con in an effort to regain image!
With summons arriving from Der Haag, the General Election seems closer! Trying to explain a peanut in big words is an insult to the intelligence of The Kenyan People!
