SHOCK: ‘Mutula probably died of viral infection among others’, government pathologist report indicates

November 15, 2013

The late Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo died from clotting of his blood, according to government pathologist Dr Johanes Odour.

In a report presented to the Criminal Investigations Department on October 19, Oduor said this led to acute internal bleeding, a condition he called “generalized haemorrogical condition”.

“There is possibility that the bleeding was a result of a disseminated intravascular coagulation,“ Oduor said in his report.

The postmortem and toxicological report comes nearly six months after Mutula died at his home in Maanzoni.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) also known as disseminated intravascular coagulopathy or consumptive coagulopathy, is a medical condition that develops when the normal balance between bleeding and clotting is disturbed.

Excessive bleeding and clotting injures body organs, and causes anemia or death.

DIC leads to the formation of small blood clots inside the blood vessels throughout the body which disrupt normal blood flow to organs such as the kidneys, which may malfunction as a result.

DIC can be caused due to various cancers, bacterial or fungal infections, viral infections, liver disease, snake bites shock, heat stroke or aortic aneurysm (when the walls of the aorta rupture causing massive internal hemorrhage and can lead to shock and death within minutes to hours.

DIC can occur acutely but also on a slower, chronic basis, depending on the underlying problem.

It is common in the critically ill, and may participate in the development of multiple organ failure, which may lead to death.

Oduor could not categorically state what caused Mutula to suffer the clotting and resultant massive bleeding in his internal organs.

”The DIC could not be identified by postmortem and tissue analysts but the presence of ephedrine is significant and may have contributed to the death “

According to drugs.com website, ephedrine is used for the temporary relief of shortness of breath, chest tightness, and wheezing due to bronchial asthma.

Ephedrine which is a decongestant and bronchi dilator works by reducing swelling and constricting blood vessels in the nasal passages and widening the lung airways, allowing you to breathe more easily.

Ephedrine should not be used together with anything that contains caffeine as it can increase blood pressure.

Foreign pathologists who includedBritish pathologist, Dr Ian Madison Calder are yet to file their findings on Mutula’s death.

Mutula was found dead in his Maanzoni home on Saturday, April 27.

Since then, there has been widespread speculation about the cause of his death.

Oduor’s report will help bring to an end some of the speculation that there could have been foul play in Mutula’s death.

Police have so far questioned caused four people who were at the house when he died.

They include his cook, a farm hand, the farm manager and farm supervisor as well as the butcher who sold the meat which was the last meal that the senator took before his death.
