No, the meeting between parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chairman and Budalangi MP Ababu Namwamba, Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua, ousted ODM Executive Director Magerer Langat and Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung’aro recently in Mombasa was not about ODM politics or CORD coalition politics, rather, it was to oil the palm of Public Accounts Chair Ababu Namwamba and several members of his committee to save governor Mutua from career shattering public funds embezzlement accusations being leveled against him by the Auditor General.
Machakos County has seen millions of shillings embezzled as Mutua put up a spirited public relations campaign to hoodwink the population that he is a working governor. His priorities are upside down, so are his modus operandi. Mutua floutes all known procurement rules.
The embattled governor is listing high profile guests to Machakos, with the most recent being none other than President Uhuru Kenyatta who was duped into opening a ‘modern’ toilet in an event where several of the county’s MCAs were barred from attending.
This impeccable revelation comes amidst heightened political bickering pitting the Ababu Namwamba led ‘rebels’ with others in ODM and Governor Mutua solo leadership with others in Wiper. It is not coincidence that the two teams seek to cover their financial improprieties by agitating for ‘reforms’ in their respective political parties.
The strategy is to maintain an onslaught on their two political parties even as they build their financial muscle in anticipation of going it alone come 2017. Namwamba, who came back from the US towards the 2007 elections as broke as Kenya under Kanu in the 1980s is today among the most wealthy legislators in town, his wealth being, for all that is known, a result of legislative dealings as first time MP chairing several parliamentary committees, sports minister and now PAC chairman.
So well choreographed was the event that Kenyans bought the fallacy that the quartet – of Ababu, Mung’aro, Mutua and Magerer – were discussing ODM agenda. Far from it.
To even debunk the myth that Namwamba and groupies were discussing ODM matters, the meeting was attended by several members PAC – both CORD and Jubilee – but who were ‘shy’ to face the camera. At that point, embattled ODM Executive Director Magerer Langat was brought on board to confuse the media and the masses that what was being discussed was ODM/CORD matters. This gave the other Mpigs time to disappear in thin air.
According to a local newspaper, Mutua gave each of the complaint parliamentary accounts committee members sh 1 million for ‘lunch’, with their chair, the Budalangi MP, raking in millions more.
Machakos County is sinking with creditors, suppliers and contractors having unpaid debts running into billions of shillings. Mutua’s well oiled propaganda machine, only second to President Uhuru’s all time spin doctors, Â has convinced many people, especially the gullible Kenyan mainstream media, that he is a worker. Curiously, a recent report by an NGO on county expenditure did not cover Machakos County, with claims that Gov. Mutua had paid the NGO millions to not poll residents of his county.
