Presidential Strategic Communications Unit (PSCU) has apparently changed the photo policy regarding President Uhuru’s digital images. Recent photos appear embedded with a watermark. While this is unprecedented, owing to the fact the President Uhuru is a collective property of the country, it may have been necessitated with the increased use of President Uhuru’s digital images in Kenya’s mainstream media.
Most photos of President Uhuru you see in mainstream media are actually taken by State House photographers. In most instances, the media does not credit the original owners of Uhuru’s photos which has apparently led to the change in photo policy at state house.
However, for a presidency which relies heavily on photo propaganda, it is a wait and see scenario as the media may not take lightly the ‘slighting’ by deciding to have the photos ‘protected’.
The watermark inscribed is @pscu which is also the twitter handle of the President’s press service. However, not all photos appear with the watermark, especially the ones where the person of the President is captured.
