An 80 year old grandmother from Nyeri relocated to Nairobi after getting the Mau Mau compensation money, leaving her 82 year old husband, Mzee Lawrence Kairianja, to eat his tomatoes!
The granny, Thedrinah Wanjiru, was awarded Ksh 400,000 as compensation for the atrocities the Mau Mau underwent under British colonial authorities.
While leaving her husband – whom she says she still loves – Wanjiru said she was just doing what the husband had done to her earlier.
“It is true we received this amount, we have been using it together with my husband. I want him back though he also mistreated me when he used to work in Nairobi as a messenger. In fact he left me alone here without food to give to my children and now he is crying foul?†she asks.
Wanjiru has adopted a new lifestyle, complete with silver and gold bling. Attempts to reconcile the two have hit a snag, as the woman has chased the husband from her home, forcing villagers to erect for him another house.
Wanjiru, mother of seven, relocated to the green city of Nairobi with her four eldest children.
While giving the money, UK High Commissioner Dr Christian Turner had urged the families not to look at the money but the statement of ‘regret’ by the British government. It seems for Wanjiru, this golden advice fell on deaf old ears.
