Not many Kenyans remember Mutahi Ngunyi defrauded Ford Foundation $108,000

Mutahi Ngunyi – the man revered in Jubilee circles as political scientist per excellence has this criminal history which not so many Kenyans worshipping him may be knowing.

It helps Ngunyi to hide behind 140 characters and spew vitriol against Luos because his audience have very vague idea about him, as many are fellows who came of age in the last five years. Older folks, however, have very scant regard of Ngunyi, owing to a fraud case he together with others pulled on Ford Foundation, a US donor agency.

Between 1993 and 1997, Ngunyi worked at the Ford Foundation (this too may sound quite perplexing considering how Ngunyi has been on the forefront accusing ‘western donor organizations’ of plotting endlessly against Jubilee regime) in a programme called Series on Alternative Research in East Africa Trust (Sareat); some sort of a policy think tank.

Together with Zimbabwean Jonathan Moyo (who would later become President Robert Mugabe’s publicity minister) and four others, they defrauded the institution a whooping $108,000. The others included Joshua Nyunya, Milka Wanjiru Njuguna, Monicah Wanjiru and Talunoza Trust.

The case dragged on in Kenyan courts but when bad publicity emanating from it didn’t augur well with Ford Foundation, it was meretriciously settled out of court.
