Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has said that police had no prior intelligence on the Mandera attack that occured early Tuesday.
Nkaissery said an unknown number of Al Shabaab militants sneaked into the country from Somalia and raided Soko Mbuzi area inhabited by non-locals aided by local collaborators killing 14 people and leaving 11 injured.
The Interior CS said eight of those injured in the early morning attack have been airlifted to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized treatment.
Nkaissery added that the militants had targeted 150 people who live in the estate but were repulsed by Kenya Defence Forces and police on the ground, with 136 residents being rescued and evacuated to safety.
He further stated that security officers are pursuing the runaway Al Shabaab raiders adding that three aircraft have been dispatched to beef up security in North Eastern.
According to Mandera County Commissioner Alex ole Nkoyo, the militants attacked the village at 2AM on Tuesday morning and planted grenades on the doorsteps of the residents.
Nkoyo said most of the residents were sleeping in tents outside their houses due to the hot weather prompting the militants to shoot at the villagers indiscriminately leading to the deaths.
