Former President Nelson Mandela of South Africa Thursday died at the age of 95. He died at his home in Johannesburg ‘in a peaceful manner’.
The news was announced by President Jacob Zuma.
The former freedom fighter had been ill for a long time. The last months he resided in in Johannesburg and received medical help.
In September he left the hospital after a recurrent pneumonia and ailing health.

Mandela was the figurehead in the struggle against apartheid. As a lawyer, he resisted racist laws of his country without violence.
After the Sharpeville massacre in 1960, he concluded that an armed struggle was necessary. His movement, the ANC, became prohibited and in 1962, Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment.
At the end of the 80s the apartheid system collapsed. The white president De Klerk released Mandela in 1990. This was his speech.
