Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni is using his sugar deal with President Uhuru to pitch for his 2016 re-election campaign.
According to sources in Kampala, President Museveni is expected next week to use the deal to explain to Sugar farmers in Uganda that he is better suited to handle the Uganda economy in post-2016, saying his opponents cannot ‘trade effectively’ with Kenya.
President Museveni treated Uhuru to a ‘home-coming’ including an address to parliament and a guard of honour parade.
Uganda projects the deal will  create at least 800,000 new jobs and set Uganda as the region’s largest sugar producer. However, in Nairobi, President Uhuru’s government is struggling to explain what Kenya got from the deal, with the opposition calling it a raw deal.
Government has given mixed, sometimes conflicting information, as to whether there was a deal or not, and are yet to release the contents of the deal to the public.
