Living large: Members of parliament salaries

Kenya’s members of parliament are living large compared to their foreign counterparts, even without their hefty sendoff package.

An average Kenyan worker would have to work 66 years to earn an MP’s bonus. By comparison, politicians in most European countries earn 3-4 times the salary of an average worker.

When Prime Minister Raila Odinga condemned the heft send off package and a day later President Kibaki declined to assent to the bill many Kenyans praised the move.

The chart below indicates that Kenya politicians are the most highly paid in world.
