Changes at Nation Media Group has seen long time columnist Macharia Gaitho exit the newsroom.
Nairobi News reports that Mr Gaitho, alongside Jaindi Kisero, has opted for early retirement. However, the two will retain their columns with the media newspaper and serve as ‘editorial consultants’.
Mr. Gaitho exits with a historical baggage of sealing objective journalism in Kenya when he led all journalists to pay homage to President Uhuru in the initial stages of his rule. While Gaitho has on several occassions said he doesn’t regret diluting independence of journalists by that single act, he gets offended when reminded that the tour was not worth it.
“I wish to announce the retirement of Jaindi Kisero and Macharia Gaitho at the end of August 2015 after a committed and distinguished service to the Nation Media Group. Both Jaindi and Macharia requested to retire early and we have reluctantly accepted their requests,†a communication from Editor-in-Chief Tom Mshindi said on Friday.
