“For the Luo, it seems, ours is to give the firewood that keeps the ODM flame alive so that other communities can come and warm themselves…” – Dikembe Disembe.
In an opinion published elsewhere on this forum, columnist Dikembe Disembe raises weighty issues touching on the Luo – where he ethnically belongs – and ODM party. The gist of Dikembe’s argument is that other communities in ODM often gang up against Luos whenever party matters are being dialogued on. (Read: Luo Community and ODM: Prospects, Challenges and Outright Myths).
Luos should cease poking their noses into the ODM Sec-Gen business, they are unable in such a serious position – just like their unfortunate brothers of Coast. This is not due to their obligation to redeem this party from the Luoism tag neither is it because they (for the time Prof Nyong’o held that position) have failed to snatch the presidency from the Highland Primates. It is because their cling on that position will grip the party at the groin and maybe deny it the renewed gusto, speed and vision it desperately needs. I think this is one of those rare occasions Luos should follow what our political god and brand ( Jakom) has foreseen, that it is not proper for another Luo to hold that docket.
Methinks Baba wants to shift the centre and struggle of opposition politics from Luoland because he has at last discovered that the struggle concerns all Kenyans. We have so far lost this struggle for liberation because some few Luo politicians have pretended that their miscalculated enthusiasm could detach Kenya from the sucking sheer capitalism of our fellows at the CENTRE! This way, we may redeem some perishing souls of our myopic and selfish tribalists around the mountains.
Though my friend Dikembe Disembe thinks otherwise, it is better for him and on behalf of other locals of Gor Mahia and Luanda Magere to know that ‘we’ of other tribes have done Luos a favour by remaining in ODM. This is the reason we will not take serious any invitation for us to help build that ‘national’ party. We gave them an opportunity to prove to the enemies of the people that ODM is not about revenge and massacre of our opponents.
During their helm at the soft spot positions of the party, they were not able to convince other Kenyans that ODM seeks an alternative narrative. It is during their time that the propaganda for tribal hatred was spread most effectively. As such, Baba was thought unfit to be president of Kenya simply because some foolish Luos would threaten innocent Kenyans in some “Kiosk English”.
Raila Odinga must be at his best political thoughts now because he seeks to leave us a really national party. He wants to convince friends and mostly foes of the Third Liberation that the party is more than Luo and that her influential officials can come from without Luos!
It is unfortunate that Raila has revealed his frustration with Luo politicians this late. They are the reason Jaramogi and himself never became presidents, they are always around him so that he does not see their calculations to exploit the Odingaism in Nyanza. If they could not engineer a massive registration in the Ministry of Immigration and Registration of Persons or even mobilize a handsome voter turn-out in CORD strongholds, is there any ‘Democratic Right’ they should contest for big positions? Let them not cry “Democracy” because they are the reason democracy bleeds to-date.
As for you of the Coast region, you are too feeble to merit any serious paragraph in this discourse. Show some political seriousness and convince the millions of your people without identity cards that Tyranny of Numbers is vital in politics. If you cannot give the party one million votes from the whole province, what business do you have admiring even the position of a cook during party meetings?
Do I care what happens? However, for the mere candidature of Dr Agnes Zani; a Coasterian, I and many youths in the Coast have developed renewed interest in our party, ODM!
