The Neighbouring country of Uganda is in frenzy after young royal Tooro King caused a storm with his style of handshake during the birthday ceremony of another King, Kabaka Muwenda Ronald Mutebi.
The King’s swag is the new in-thing among young people in Uganda. Already, variations of the handshake is already being posted by people mimicking Oyoo.
King Oyoo Nyimba, the royal head of the Toro Kingdom, shook hands with the Prime Minister of the Baganda Kingdom without ‘paying attention’ to him, and maintained a straight face, renewing an old kingship rivalry between the Toro (Bunyoro) and the Baganda.
The King, who had sat with one leg on the knee, crossed, greeted the Prime Minister of the Baganda ‘Katikkiro’ Charles Peter Mayiga Kingdom who had just kneeled while greeting the Baganda King.
The Toro Kingdom, annexed in 1822 from the larger Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, a river lake nilotic fiefdom which dates back to the 4th century, is among the many kingdoms in Uganda restored by current President Yoweri Museveni after they had been disbanded by Milton Obote, former President of Uganda.
Ugandans have since picked the new style, which is gaining currency in Kenya.
