The much hyped President Uhuru trip to Port Florence may not happen this week after all.
The presidency is reported to have postponed the trip to next week as government shops for serious projects to launch after a report revealed the area has no significant national government activity going on. Uhuru is reported to be furious about the revelation.
The trip to Kisumu, where the President was also expected to chair a cabinet meeting at Kisumu State Lodge, is steeped in political undertones with the region remaining indifferent to it.
“People are neither excited nor concerned about it. We hear he is coming and can only wait to see,” responded a youth in Kondele, one of Kisumu’s low income neighbourhoods.
Uhuru returns to Nyanza after the infamous Migori trip where residents shouted down area governor Okoth Obado in his presence, an act that several quarters roundly condemned as ‘disrespect to the head of state’, and ‘political intolerance’.
Residents of Nyanza are gearing for a referendum called by CORD leader Raila Odinga with murmurs that the President is trying to pacify the region ahead of the crucial vote.
For now, it is a wait-and-see if the trip will materialize.
