The unveiling of Mau Mau plague at Uhuru Park’s Freedom Corner in Nairobi was snubbed by all elected Kikuyu politicians except Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria.
No Member of Parliament or Senator from Mt. Kenya region or even Nairobi attended the solemn event. Also, none of the TNA politicians from other regions, including Chairman Johnson Sakaja, attended the event.
President Uhuru, who was in Nairobi, was busy as he was meeting visiting Mauritius President.
However, his speech was read by Ali Wario, cabinet secretary for culture, who was accompanied by Attorney General Githu Muigai and Foreign Affairs CS Amina Mohammed.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, former Attorney General Amos Wako, Ndhiwa MP Agostino Neto and Kibra MP Ken Okoth attended the event. Also present is nominated senator Elizabeth Ongoro and former members of Parliament Lawyer Hon Paul Muite and Hon Gitobu Imanyara,
The was high presence of members of the civil society, including Maina Kiai, activist Boniface Mwangi, former detainee Onyango Oloo, Davinder Lamba, Atsango Chesoni, Wafula Buke, Tony Irungu, Cidi Otieno, Gacheke Gachihi among others.
Observing the conspicous absence of leaders from the Kikuyu community, Wafula Buke, himself a former detainee in the Nyayo era quipped: “Mau mau still traumatizes homeguards”.
