Fire seems to be the most preferred send off option for Nairobi County Government after it hiked the fees for burial of the dead while at the same time reducing costs for cremation.
In a culturally conservative nation like Kenya, where burial is still the preferred, and even respectful way to send off a ‘loved one’, the changes are being seen as too punitive.
Recommendations on the 2015/2016 County Finance Bill has seen cost of burial jumpt from Ksh 25,000 to Ksh 30,000. However, the cost of cremation has reduced from Ksh 13,000 to Ksh 9,000. Cremating a child will cost Sh6,000 while an infant Sh4,000. Buryng a child has however increased from Ksh 15,000 to Ksh 22,000.
The scattering of ashes charge will be Sh1,000.
