Kiambu County Assembly member charged in court with Rape

Jackson Njuguna Karanja was today arraigned before Resident Magistrate Stella Nekesa Televa in Thika charged with the rape and indecent assault.

Karanja who was nominated by Kiambu County Governor William Kabogo now risks loosing his seat because of the offense, which carries punitive penalty, including death, if found guilty.

 The 35 year old former Ruiru town elected councilor was charged that on November 24 at Kangaita Estate in Ruiru of Kiambu County, he intentionally and unlawfully raped Jane Wambui Kagiri.

Karanja denied the charges.

Defence lawyer Gathii Irungu successfully applied for reasonable bond or cash bail stating that his client would not abscond court since he was a senior politician known to both the police and complainant.

“The police and complainant know where to find him if they so wished,” submitted Irungu .

The magistrate ordered the accused be released on a bond of Sh Sh 200 000 with surety of similar amount or cash bail of Sh 100 000.

The case is fixed for hearing on Jan 20 2014
