The much hyped radical clean-up of the judiciary was a mere public gimmick meant to silence an expectant population that change had finally come. The new constitution, with all its attendant systems of checks and balances, appear to be ill-equipped to deal with white collar thieves.
So outrageous are the sitting allowances of the JSC headed by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga that it reeks of outright theft.
Chief registrar Gladys Shollei, earmaked for removal from the judiciary, is fighting both a reputation and a career. In the tidbits of revelations she has shared with the public, the numbers, in shillings, just bogs down.
According to Shollei, the JSC from the period Jan 2011 to July 2013 has held 500 meetings which, in her own words, are ‘baseless’ with a whooping sh141 million used to pay only the 14 members as SITTING allowances.
Considering many of the members, like Chief Justice Willy Mutunga also earn millions of shillings each month as salary with numerous benefits, these expenditures does not further the rule of law.
Here is a list of what each has taken home during that period, crossing the Red Sea of poverty once and for all.
