The Kenya Defense Forces has taken control of Kismayu the last stronghold of Somali militants-Al shabaab. KDF spokesman Col Cyrus Oguna claimed victory stating that Kismayu was liberated at 2 am on Friday with jets and ground forces.
Several Alshabaab warriors were killed during the attacks, but the exact figures have to be released yet.
“Residents are advised to avoid areas where KDF and SNA troops are to avoid collateral damage.” Col Oguna said.
KDF said it had suffered no casualties.
“Our troops are safe and sound, so far no casualties,” the military said.
Several key installation held by Alshabaab were destroyed on Thursday night including an armoury store at the Kismayu airport, a militia training and command facility in the outskirts of Kismayu,
KDF urged residents to avoid areas close to Alshabab hide outs and installations “We urge the residents of Kismayu to remain calm and stay away from al-Shabaab targets. Civilian safety and security is a top priority for KDF.”
The Kismayu takeover has been on the offing since several weeks now.
At least 100 Alshabaab warriors were killed when nearby towns Janacabdalla and Harbolle were taken over last week.
Kismayo residents report KDF control over the port, but not the whole city. The city is considered Alshabaab’s last stronghold. The victory is a major achievement for KDF/AMISOM and for the war against terror group- Alshabaab.
