Homa bay Senator Otieno Kajwang’ has for the first since the bungled ODM nominations revealed that ODM leader Raila Odinga was not in charge of the delegates conference and he would have easily lost to Simba Arati.
Arati, the Dagorreti North MP vied for the ODM party leader’s position against Raila during the NDC meeting and Kajwang’ now claims he was being supported by delegates from Central Kenya and the Rift Valley, two regions which eluded Raila in the 2013 general elections.
Kajwang’ called the disruption of the event by the ODM ‘men in black’ as a blessing in disguise, saying they saved the party from being taken over by its competitors.
“The party leader was not in charge of the party. If he thought he was, he was mistaken; he was the target of humiliation. He should have asked himself the question: ‘How could Arati, the man who would have not been an MP without his (Raila’s) support, have the guts to run against him? It had been planned that Arati would beat Raila with the support from Rift Valley and Central Kenya delegates,” Kajwang says.
While Simba Arati has maintained he vied for the position duly as a member, others, especially Luo Nyanza leaders, have blamed the former PM of stopping them from vying.
The situation has led to Rongo MP indicating he intends to quit ODM ahead of the 2017 general elections and form another party already baptised as ‘kalausi’ – whirlwind.
