At a church function in Busia, Deputy President William Samoei Ruto has told teachers to respect the constitution and return back to classes, saying the two bodies have adequately resolved their grievances. The DP claimed teachers are holding the government at ransom.
The DP did not mention both the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court rulings.
Here is his message:
“We request teachers to heed calls to return to school and teach. We have independent institutions which have pronounced themselves on this issue. Matters relating to teachers are handled by the Teachers Service Commission and our salaries as public servants are determined by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, both of which derive their independence and authority from the Constitution. Â Those commissions have stated their position on the teachers salaries and it’s important as law abiding citizens to respect that”.
