The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and a host of western diplomats are ‘furious’ over allegations by ‘people in Kenya’ linking them to futile attempts to withdraw from the ICC.
The Telegraph,a conservative British tabloid carried a story purporting that western diplomats are pushing for the delay of Uhuru case at the ICC for a period of one year. Other Kenyan local media, including Daily Nation, picked up the story!
However, details now emerging points to the usual propaganda by Kenya’s statehouse operatives to hoodwink the public that Uhuru has no case to answer, or that he is so important as to be let loose by the International Criminal Court.
It is alleged that the article was penned by a statehouse operative and sent as a note to the editor, the Telegraph unknowingly picked it up assuming the story to be a genuine breaking news, yes it was propaganda!
Numerous embassy sources in Nairobi are maintain that the position taken last year has NOT changed and if it did the message will come from their home offices. Ambassadors are junior staff, all they can do is advice but the final policy position is taken by the Foreign Affairs minister of the respective countries or the European Commission.
“The Ambassadors and the peoples of the European Union support Kenya’s cooperation with the ICC. Any contrary information is a hoax,” a senior embassy official by one of the UN security council members has said this morning.
The Telegraph story, widely shared on social media, claims that a host of western diplomats are preparing to table a formal request to the UN security council to defer Kenya’s cases by one year.
The African Union, on its part, had argued that the cases should be discontinued till the president and deputy leaves office.
During the extraordinary summit, another Kenyan tabloid, The People, claimed that the UN Secretary General had personally called ALL the African heads of states pleading with them not to withdraw from the ICC, another propaganda.
The story by Anthony Mwangi (no pun intended) goes ahead to reveal how Mr Moon agreed to convene a session by the UN security council and ‘push for dialogue’ over the AU demands.
“Moon called each of the attending Heads of State pleading with each not to endorse the resolution to pull out of the Rome Statute and promising to have their grievances addressed,†writes Mwangi.
