The amounts are mind-blowing to thousands of jobless graduates with better education and ideas on journalism who were bypassed when Citizen Tv employed thankless journalists who, at the height of the last general elections, exodused to K24, only to find the company full of dry bones, to use the Old Testament.
When I first saw the amounts, I asked myself whether they were in Kenya shillings or Ugandan Currency. A quarter a million for a diploma holder with no special looks, reading from a script written by another fellow, sitting behind screens and light projectors being controlled by others, yet they left all that money, and boycotted their work, only to stampede at K24.
“It was all politics, sad politics,” concluded one citizen editor who refused to leave despite repeatedly being pulled over by K24.
Their case, now being dubbed the “Million Man March” ever staged by journalists in Kenya, is a classic example of what little education, and partisanship, can do to journalism.
Franklin Wambugu earned Ksh 430,000. For the month that he did not show up at Citizen, the giant media house is now demanding this money be paid  back.
The amounts demanded by Citizen TV can be assumed to be equivalent to one month’s salary, it is very normal for an employment contract to have a clause like “…one month in liu of notice….” the clause basically clause requires that if either party quits the contract abruptly, for whatever reason, he or she must pay the other party an amount equivalent to a one month or otherwise you must discharge your contractual obligation till it ends legally.
Belinda Obura, from the money she has to pay back, used to earn at Citizen Ksh 260,000, Tom Mboya Ksh 200,000, Torome Tirike Ksh 100,000,Mutakha Boniface Ksh 86,000 and Joab Mwaura Ksh 63,000.
Others included Frankline Macharia 50,000, Violet Odindo Ksh 120,000, Qui,Wairimu and Mercy Ksh 50 000, Ksh 30,000 and ksh 20,000 respectively.
It will be interesting to see how the case will go considering most of these diploma and certificate holders have since been fired from K24 for laziness, sexual issues and other misdemeanours. But, to fair to the financial gods, they must REPAY these monies!
As usual, consequences have choices.
