This is how low our national government can sink to win cheap political contests in Bomet County.
The County Government has pumped 100m shillings to construct a stadium only for local MPs to demand that the same land be constructed a 500m university , that’s yet to be budgeted. Moi University Senate had earlier identified another land in a place called Sigor in conjunction with the Bomet County Education Board.
The County Govt constructed a new school in a new site so that Moi University can use the facilities of the existing Sigor High School to establish a university in the fastest time possible. The school is now ready as is the renovation of the former school that will house the university.
Later, Bomet County MPs wanted the university established in Bomet town instead. A controversy ensued pitting the University and Governor Isaac Ruto on the one hand and MPs on the other.
When Uhuru visited BOMET Sunday 10th May, the MPs handed him a lease for a 17h land after he has finished his speech. He looked unaware of the lease as several efforts had been made to hand him the doc before but without success. He announced the lease after people had started trooping out of the field.
The lease covers land that a 100m stadium is underway, ASK show ground and a wetland. NLC says they were not involved in the preparation of the lease contrary to the law. County Land Board was supposed to have been involved too yet the Board is yet to be constituted. Matiangi in his letter LIES that the land is proposed for the construction of a stadium.
It doesn’t make economic sense or any sense for that matter to demolish a project to establish another project just to win a political contest. Not in a country where people still die of starvation.
National govt should be made to see the sense in having the university in Sigor to curb unnecessary waste.
